Quick answers

Size of one roll
Rolawn and Turfonline cut rolls 610 × 1,640 mm. That is about 1 m².
Weight of one roll
15–20 kg, says Rolawn, depending on how wet it is. Carbutts Turf says 18 kg on average.
Rolls on a pallet
Up to 60 at Carbutts Turf. Rolawn puts 90 on a pallet.
Thickness
Rolawn cuts 6–12.5 mm of soil. The grass on top is about 25 mm tall.
Rolls for 20 m²
21 rolls with 5% extra. They weigh about 315–420 kg.

How to work it out

  1. Measure the lawn in metres. Multiply length by width for m².
  2. Multiply the m² by 1.05 for Rolawn's 5% extra.
  3. Divide by 1 m² per roll and round up. That is your number of rolls.
  4. Multiply the rolls by 15 and by 20 kg to get the weight range.
  5. Divide the rolls by 60 (or 90) to count pallets. Round up.

10 × 5 m = 50 m²
50 m² × 1.05 = 52.5 m²
Round up: 53 rolls
53 × 15–20 kg = 795–1,060 kg
53 ÷ 60 → 1 pallet

What area does one roll cover?

About 1 m². Rolawn and Turfonline cut 610 mm wide and 1,640 mm long. Rollaturf cuts narrower, longer rolls of 400 × 2,500 mm. Both cover the same area.

Rolawn also sells a big roll, called Turfmaster: 533 mm wide and 24.4 m long. That is 13 m² in one roll.

Weight per roll, per pack and per pallet

  • One roll: 15–20 kg (Rolawn). Carbutts Turf gives 18 kg on average.
  • A shop pack: B&Q sells Harrowden turf in a 30 m² pack of 30 rolls. It weighs 600 kg, so about 20 kg per roll.
  • A pallet: 60 rolls weigh about 900–1,200 kg. 90 rolls weigh about 1,350–1,800 kg.

Turf takes up water, so a roll lifted after rain weighs more. That is why Rolawn gives a range, not one number.

Turfonline delivers turf on a pallet to the kerb. Plan how you will move it from there to the lawn.

How thick (or deep) is a turf roll?

Rolawn's sheet gives two numbers. The soil on a roll is 6–12.5 mm thick. The grass on top is about 25 mm tall.

One Scottish grower, Mitchell Turf, says its rolls are 25 mm thick. Check if a seller means the soil or the grass. Rolawn says all its sizes are rough, as cut.

Rolling turf and soil

Before laying: firm the soil by treading over it 2 or 3 times. Rolawn calls this "heeling in". It says don't compact the soil, because hard soil stops water draining.

After laying: you don't need a roller. Firm the turf gently with a tamper or the back of a rake. The RHS allows a light roller. Rolawn says never use rollers or whacker plates. Neither wants a heavy roller.

Rolawn also says to work from planks while you lay the turf.
