That covers 1,100 sq ft: your 1,000 sq ft of lawn, with 10% extra.
One BC grower says a 10 sq ft roll weighs 25–40 lb. We use the middle. No other Canadian grower printed a weight.
What it costs

Quick answers
- Sod roll coverage
- 10 sq ft (2 × 5 ft) at 9 Canadian sellers. 4 sellers cut 9 sq ft rolls.
- Weight of one roll
- 25–40 lb (11–18 kg) for a 10 sq ft roll. That is from one BC grower.
- Rolls on a skid
- 50 to 80, by seller. That is about 500–800 sq ft.
- Price of one roll
- $4.50–$10.90 at 8 Canadian farms and yards. Before delivery and tax.
- Rolls for 200 sq ft
- 20 rolls of 10 sq ft. With 10% extra, get 22.
How to work it out
- Get the lawn's square feet by multiplying its length and width. In metres, multiply the m² by 10.76.
- Add 10% for pieces you cut at the edges.
- Divide by the roll size your farm cuts: 10 or 9 sq ft. Round up to whole rolls.
- For the weight, multiply the rolls by about 32.5 lb (14.7 kg) each.
20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
300 × 1.10 = 330 sq ft, with 10% extra
330 ÷ 10 = 33 rolls
33 × 32.5 lb = 1,073 lb, about 486 kg
Roll sizes: how much a roll of sod covers
We found the 2 × 5 ft roll at 9 Canadian sellers, more than any other size. Others cut smaller or bigger rolls, so ask your farm before you count.
| Roll | Size | In metres | Sellers | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 sq ft (0.93 m²) | 2 × 5 ft | 0.61 × 1.52 m | 9 | Alberta, Quebec, Vancouver Island |
| 9 sq ft (0.84 m²) | 2 × 4–4.5 ft (one grower) | 0.61 × 1.22–1.37 m | 4 | Ontario, BC Lower Mainland |
| 11.25 sq ft (1.05 m²) | 24 × 67.5 in | 0.61 × 1.71 m | 1 | Manitoba |
| 12 sq ft (1.11 m²) | – | – | 2 | Quebec (two yard calculators) |
A dash means the sellers printed the area but not the size.
River Meadow Farms on Vancouver Island cuts a narrow roll, about 18 × 80 in. It still covers 10 sq ft.

What a roll of sod weighs
Only one Canadian grower printed a roll weight. River Meadow Farms in BC says 25–40 lb for a 10 sq ft roll.
We use the middle, 3.25 lb per sq ft. That makes a 9 sq ft roll about 29 lb (13 kg).
| Rolls | Light (25 lb each) | Middle | Heavy (40 lb each) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 roll | 11 kg | 15 kg | 18 kg |

| 50 rolls | 567 kg | 737 kg | 907 kg |
| 70 rolls | 794 kg | 1,032 kg | 1,270 kg |
From one BC grower's figures, so treat them as rough.
How thick a roll is
River Meadow says its soil layer is about ½–¾ in thick. The City of Lethbridge sod spec asks for 12.5–25 mm of soil. It names the Alberta sod growers' group as its source.
Rolls on a skid or pallet
Farms stack rolls on a skid, also called a pallet. The count changes from farm to farm.
| Seller | Province | Rolls | Sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| River Meadow Farms | BC | up to 50 | up to 500 |
| Gee Tee Holdings | MB | about 64 | 720 |
| CLS Landscape Supply | AB | 70 | 700 |
| Jardinerie Villeneuve | QC | 74 | about 740 |
| Mountainview Turf | QC | 80 | 800 |
"About" sq ft is worked out from 10 sq ft rolls. The seller did not print it.
Skid deposits and delivery
- Queensville Sod (Ontario) gives $25 back for each skid you return. It delivers only orders over 40 rolls.
- Mountainview Turf (Quebec) asks a $45 pallet deposit, which you get back.
- CLS Landscape Supply (Calgary) asks a $35 pallet deposit.
Price per roll
Some farms price sod by the roll. Compare the price per square foot, since a 9 sq ft roll covers less than a 10 sq ft one.
| Seller | Province | Roll | Per roll | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Queensville Sod | ON | 9 sq ft | $4.50 | $0.50 |
| BC Instant Lawns | BC | 9 sq ft | $5 | $0.56 |
| ProZone | AB | 10 sq ft | $5 | $0.50 |
| GTA Grounds Care | ON | 9 sq ft | $5.50 | $0.61 |

| Pépinière Moraldo | QC | 10 sq ft | $5.95 | $0.60 |
| Jardinerie Villeneuve | QC | 10 sq ft | $8.99 | $0.90 |
| River Meadow Farms | BC | 10 sq ft | $10.90* | $1.09 |
Before tax. *River Meadow charges delivery on top. Only 8 sellers, so prices are rough.
Delivery adds a lot. Mountainview charges $8 a roll delivered, against $5.80 at pickup.
We found no single rolls on the big stores' websites we checked. Home Depot Canada sells delivered lots of 500 and 1,000 sq ft. The middle was $0.90 a sq ft (2 prices, 1 store).
