Measure your lawn

Which grass?

Pallet size changes by grass and by farm. Check with your seller.

Rolls or slabs?

Farms cut sod as rolls or slabs. Ask your seller which one they sell.

Extra for cutting and edges

Purdue Extension says to order about 10% more.

Your answer

You need about
110rolls (2 × 5 ft)

That covers 1,100 sq ft: your 1,000 sq ft of lawn, with 10% extra.

Quick answers

One roll
2 × 5 ft, which is 10 sq ft.
One slab
16 × 24 in, which is about 2.67 sq ft.
Weight of one roll
About 33 lb for Kentucky bluegrass and 37 lb for tall fescue. Farms say 15–50 lb.
Pieces on a pallet
Pallet square feet ÷ piece size. So 500 sq ft of rolls is 50 pieces.
Price of one piece
Slabs $3.25–$3.50, rolls about $4.40–$5.60. Only 2 sellers each, so it is rough.

How to work it out

  1. Measure the two sides of the lawn in feet, and multiply them. That is the lawn in square feet.
  2. Add 10% extra, as Purdue Extension suggests.
  3. Divide by 10 for rolls, or by 2.67 for slabs. Round up.
  4. For the weight, multiply the pieces by what one piece weighs.

40 × 25 = 1,000 sq ft
1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100 sq ft, with 10% extra
1,100 ÷ 10 = 110 rolls of tall fescue
10 sq ft × 3.7 lb = 37 lb each
110 × 37 lb = 4,070 lb in all

Roll and slab sizes

Sodding a whole lawn? Our sod calculator counts pallets and the cost.

A standard roll is 2 ft wide and 5 ft long. It covers 10 sq ft. A standard slab is 16 × 24 in, or about 2.67 sq ft.

Not every farm cuts these sizes. Purdue Extension says slabs are usually 18 × 24 in, which is 3 sq ft. Carolina Turf Farms cuts that size too. So ask your farm before you count pieces.

  • Mini rolls: 40 × 18 in, or 5 sq ft (Sod Solutions).
  • Other 10 sq ft rolls: 60 × 24 in, or 80 × 18 in.
  • Purdue also lists rolls 18 in wide and 6 ft long, or 9 sq ft.

How thick is it? 2 farms say ½–¾ in of soil comes with the grass. A third says its rolls are about ¾ in thick in all.

What one roll or slab weighs

Weight depends on the grass and on how wet the soil is. We took the middle of growers' pallet weights for each grass. Then we worked out one piece.

Weight of one piece, by grass
GrassPer sq ft10 sq ft roll2.67 sq ft slab
Tall fescue3.7 lb37 lb10 lb
Kentucky bluegrass3.3 lb33 lb9 lb
St. Augustine6.2 lb62 lb17 lb
Zoysia5 lb50 lb13 lb
Bermuda4.2 lb42 lb11 lb
Centipede4.2 lb42 lb11 lb
Bahia7.5 lb75 lb20 lb

Farms cut warm-season grass as slabs or rolls. Super-Sod sells Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede as 2 × 5 ft rolls. Bahia is from only 2 Florida farms. Centipede is Purdue's figure for sod in general.

Farms' own figures spread wide. 3 farms put a 2 × 5 ft roll at 15–50 lb. A fourth says 25–35 lb for its 2 × 4.5 ft roll.

Water adds weight. Sod Solutions says a wet pallet can weigh up to 50% more. So a 37 lb roll of fescue could reach about 56 lb when soaked.

Big rolls

Big rolls are for crews with machines. Each one is far too heavy to lift by hand.

Big rolls from 3 farms
FarmSizeCoversWeight
Central Sod Farms (MD)42 in × 90 ft315 sq ft1,500 lb
McKellip Sod Farm (ID)30 in × 100 ft250 sq ft1,100–1,400 lb
Saratoga Sod Farm (NY)48 in × 84 ft336 sq ft1,000 lb

So one big roll weighs about 1,000–1,500 lb.

Price per roll or slab

Some farms sell single pieces for small patches. We found only 2 sellers for each kind, so treat these prices as rough (Oct 2026).

  • Slabs: $3.25–$3.50 each, in Florida and Texas.
  • 2 × 5 ft rolls: $4.40–$4.80 each in Michigan. A Rhode Island farm charges $0.56 per sq ft, or $5.60 a roll.

At one Florida seller, Sod Depot, a single slab cost more per sq ft. One St. Augustine piece was $3.25. If it is a standard 16 × 24 in slab, that is about $1.22 per sq ft. Its 400 sq ft pallet was $230.99, about $0.58 per sq ft. So there, one piece cost about 2 times the pallet price.

Farm prices by grass

NC State Extension asked North Carolina sod farms for their 2026 prices. These are for full orders, not single pieces.

Average farm price per sq ft, North Carolina 2026
GrassAt the farmDeliveredOne 16 × 24 in slab or 2 × 5 ft roll
Bermuda$0.41$0.47$1.09 a slab
Zoysia$0.59$0.65$1.57 a slab
Centipede$0.38$0.43$1.01 a slab
St. Augustine$0.60$0.64$1.60 a slab
Tall fescue$0.48$0.53$4.80 a roll
Kentucky bluegrass$0.50$0.56$5.00 a roll

Delivered means truckloads sent up to about 100 miles from the farm.

Our calculator's default, $0.75 a sq ft from only 3 sellers, is high next to these farm prices. Type your own seller's price in step 3.
