£6.49 per m² is the middle of 3 sellers for about 50 m² (Rolawn, Turfonline, Wickes), with VAT, Oct 2026. For 10–20 m², the middle was £10.02.

Quick answers

An 8 × 6 m lawn
That is 48 m² of lawn. With 5% extra, order 50.4 m², or 51 rolls. At £6.49 per m², that is about £331.
One roll of turf
About 1 m², cut 610 × 1,640 mm by Rolawn and Turfonline. It weighs 15–20 kg.
Extra for cutting
Rolawn adds about 5% for cutting and shaping. The calculator also offers 10%.
Price
The middle price for a 50 m² order is £6.49 per m², with VAT. For 10–20 m² it is about £10.02.
Soil under it
Rolawn wants at least 100 mm of good topsoil, ideally 150 mm.

How to work it out

  1. Measure the length and width of the lawn in metres. Multiply them to get the lawn area in m².
  2. For an odd shape, split the lawn into squares. Work out each one and add them up.
  3. Add 5% for cutting and shaping: m² × 1.05.
  4. Round up to whole rolls. One roll covers about 1 m².
  5. Multiply the m² you buy by the price per m² to estimate the cost.

8 × 6 = 48 m²
48 × 1.05 = 50.4 m²
Round up: 51 rolls
51 × £6.49 = £331 (Rolawn charges £6.49 for 51 rolls)

Turf prices: why big orders cost less per m²

UK growers sell turf by the m², and one roll is about 1 m². The price per m² drops as the order gets bigger. Here are two growers' prices, with VAT.

100 m²£5.89£589£3.96£396
250 m²£5.89£1,473£3.88£970

Rolawn prices are for its Medallion turf, Turfonline's for its Jubilee turf. "–" means no price was shown for that size.

Wickes sells Rolawn turf too. With VAT, 20 rolls cost £170 on sale. For 40 rolls or more, it is £6.60 per m².

Delivery and small orders

  • Rolawn: 10 rolls at least. Saturday delivery costs £72. It also lists a short-term 6.5% surcharge.
  • Wickes: 20 rolls at least.
  • Turfonline: delivery is included in most areas, on a pallet at the kerb.

Some growers sell for less. Carbutts Turf starts from £2.90 per m² and Rollaturf asks £4.92. Neither page says if VAT is in.

Getting the soil ready for turfing

  1. Topsoil: you need at least 100 mm of good topsoil, ideally 150 mm. To find how much top soil to buy, use our topsoil for lawn calculator.
  2. Dig or rotavate: the RHS goes 20–25 cm deep to break up hard ground.
  3. Rake: Rolawn says remove stones bigger than 6 mm. Rake a pre-turf fertiliser into the top 25 mm.
  4. Firm it: tread the soil ("heel it in") 2 or 3 times. Rolawn says firm it lightly, but don't compact it.
  5. Water it: two days before laying, Rolawn wets the soil to 75 mm deep.

How much water does newly laid turf need?

Newly laid turf needs to be watered from the first day. Growers and the RHS agree: water often until the roots take hold. Turfonline says that takes 2–4 weeks.

In summer, Turfonline waters twice a day in week 1. Rolawn says once or twice a day for 2 weeks when warm.

How to tell it has had enough

Lift a corner of a roll. The soil under it should feel damp. Water early in the morning or in the evening, says Rolawn.

Lindum says you can skip a watering after heavy rain. Rolawn and Turfonline still check the soil after rain.

Questions people ask

How much turf do I need?

Multiply the lawn's length by its width in metres, then add 5% for cuts. An 8 × 6 m lawn needs about 51 m² of turf, about £331 at £6.49 per m². Our turf roll calculator counts rolls and weight.

How much should I water new turf?

No grower gives a litre figure. Water until the top 10 cm of soil is wet. Lindum and Turfonline say it should still be damp 30 minutes later.

Do you need to water new turf if it rains?

Check the soil anyway, say Rolawn and Turfonline. Lift a corner of a roll. If the soil under it is dry, water it.

How long do you need to water new turf?

Turfonline says keep watering for 2–4 weeks while the roots grow. Water every day at first, then 2–3 times a week. After that, water in dry spells.

Do I need to rotavate before laying turf?

Yes, loosen the soil first. The RHS says dig or rotavate 20–25 cm deep. Rolawn says at least 100 mm, ideally 150 mm.

When can I mow or walk on new turf?

The RHS says the first mow is usually about 3 weeks after laying. Until then, stay off it except to water. Rolawn says mowing should be the only traffic for the first few weeks.

How much does turf cost per m²?

About £6.49 per m² for 50 m², with VAT, the middle of 3 sellers. Rolawn charges £12.29 for 10–19 rolls and £5.89 for 100 or more.
