Measure your lawn
Your answer
For 1,000 sq ft of lawn, with 10% extra.
A full pallet weighs about 2,790 lb, and more when wet.
What it costs
Sod prices change a lot by grass and area. Our default is a middle price from only 3 US sellers (Oct 2026). Use your seller's price.
Quick answers
- How much sod is on a pallet?
- About 400–700 sq ft. It depends on the grass and the farm.
- How big is one piece?
- Slabs are often 16 × 24 in (2.67 sq ft). Some farms cut 18 × 24 in (3 sq ft), so ask yours. Rolls are 2 × 5 ft (10 sq ft).
- How much extra?
- Order about 10% more than you think you need, says Purdue Extension.
- How heavy is a pallet?
- About 1,500–3,000 lb. It depends on the grass, and wet sod weighs more.
How to work it out
- Measure the length and width of your lawn in feet. Multiply them.
- Add 10% extra.
- Divide by the square feet on one pallet of your grass.
- Round up to whole pallets.
40 × 25 = 1,000 sq ft
1,000 + 10% = 1,100 sq ft
1,100 ÷ 450 = 2.4 → 3 pallets
Pallets for common lawn sizes

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 550 sq ft | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 1,100 sq ft | 3 | 3 | 3 |

| 5,000 sq ft | 5,500 sq ft | 14 | 13 | 11 |
400 sq ft: Bahia. 450 sq ft: St. Augustine, Zoysia. 500 sq ft: Bermuda, Centipede, Tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass.
Sod by grass type
Southern grasses, like St. Augustine and Bermuda, are often sold in slabs of 16 × 24 in. Fescue and bluegrass are often sold in rolls of 2 × 5 ft.
| Grass | Pallet | Comes in | Pieces | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| St. Augustine | 450 sq ft | slabs | about 169 | about 2,790 lb |
| Zoysia | 450 sq ft | slabs | about 169 | about 2,250 lb |
| Bermuda | 500 sq ft | slabs | about 187 | about 2,100 lb |
| Centipede | 500 sq ft | slabs | about 187 | about 2,100 lb |
| Bahia | 400 sq ft | slabs | about 150 | about 3,000 lb |
| Tall fescue | 500 sq ft | rolls | about 50 | about 1,850 lb |
| Kentucky bluegrass | 500 sq ft | rolls | about 50 | about 1,650 lb |
Pallet sizes and weights are the middle of growers' figures. Centipede weight is Purdue's figure for sod in general. Wet sod weighs more.
Why pallet sizes differ
Pallet sizes change from farm to farm. Sod Solutions lists slab pallets of 400, 450 and 500 sq ft.
In Florida, Bethel Farms sells about 400 sq ft on a pallet, for every grass. Up north, fescue and bluegrass rolls can come in pallets of 500, 600 or 700 sq ft.
So ask your farm how much sod is on its pallet. Then pick that grass in step 1, or use the table above.
Buying sod: price, pickup and delivery
Our middle price is $0.75 per sq ft. This is a weak figure: it comes from only 3 sellers.
One Texas seller charged $205–$325 for a 450 sq ft pallet, by grass. A cost guide from Sod Solutions says $0.30–$0.75 per sq ft, or $135–$340 a pallet.
A full pallet is heavy. Sod Solutions says 1,500–3,000 lb, and up to 50% more when it is wet. Modern Turf says a pallet is about 4 ft wide, 4 ft deep and 4 ft tall.
One Pennsylvania farm asks a $20 deposit for each wooden pallet.
Ask the farm
- How many square feet are on one pallet?
- Is the price per square foot or per pallet?
- What does delivery cost, and can they set it near the lawn?
- Is there a deposit for the pallet?
- What does the warranty cover, if there is one?
Get the soil ready first
Till the ground 4–6 in deep before the sod goes down, says The Lawn Institute. The University of Maryland Extension agrees.
If you add compost, NC State Extension says to work it into the top 6–8 in.
If you need to fill low spots first, our topsoil calculator works out how much soil to buy.
Before you order sod
- Measure the lawn in feet. For an odd shape, split it into parts and add up the square feet.
- If you added up parts, type the total as the length and 1 as the width.
- Pick your grass. Check the pallet size with the farm.
- Add 10% for cutting around edges and curves.
- Have the soil tilled, raked and level before the sod comes.
