Some bags show liters instead. One cubic foot is about 28.3 liters. One cubic meter is about 35.3 cubic feet, or 1.31 cubic yards.

Have a length, width and depth instead of cubic feet? Multiply them, all in feet, to get cubic feet first. Then divide by 27.
A space 10 × 8 ft, 6 in deep. 6 in is 0.5 ft. So 10 × 8 × 0.5 = 40 cubic feet. Then 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cubic yards.
Our cubic yard calculator does this for you, with the depth in inches. Buying bags? Divide the cubic feet by the bag size instead, and round up.
Don't divide cubic feet by 3 or by 9. Dividing by 3 changes feet to yards. Dividing by 9 changes square feet to square yards. Only 27 works for cubic feet.
Bags sold by the cubic foot
Mulch bags show their size in cubic feet. Concrete bags show a weight, but the maker says how many cubic feet each one makes.
| Bag | Bags per cubic yard | Bags to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Mulch, 1.5 cubic feet | 18 | 18 |
| Mulch, 2 cubic feet | 13.5 | 14 |
| Mulch, 3 cubic feet | 9 | 9 |
| Concrete mix, 80 lb (0.6 cubic feet) | 45 | 45 |
| Concrete mix, 60 lb (0.45 cubic feet) | 60 | 60 |
You can only buy whole bags, so we round up.
Same space, different weight
A cubic foot of stone weighs far more than a cubic foot of mulch. This matters when you carry bags or load a truck.
| Material | Pounds per cubic foot | Pounds per cubic yard |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete (Quikrete mix) | 140 | 3,780 |
| Gravel | 104 | 2,800 |
| Crusher run | 104 | 2,800 |
| Pea gravel | 100 | 2,700 |
| River rock | 93 | 2,500 |
| Sand (dry) | 89 | 2,400 |
| Fill dirt | 74 | 2,000 |
| Topsoil | 59 | 1,600 |
| Wood mulch | 22 | 600 |
Weights are for loose material. Water adds weight.
For example, 10 cubic feet of gravel weighs about 1,037 lb. The same space filled with mulch weighs about 222 lb.
Questions people ask
How many cubic feet are in a yard?
27. A yard is 3 ft, so a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet.
How many cubic feet is a yard of dirt or gravel?
