Concrete Cinder Block Calculator
Find how many concrete blocks (cinder blocks) and 30 kg mortar bags your wall needs, in feet or metres.
Measure your wall
For standard 20 cm blocks with 10 mm joints. This counts a solid wall. Doors and windows mean fewer blocks.
Your answer
For a wall of 80 sq ft, with 5% extra.
This answer is a guide. For walls that hold back soil or carry weight, check your local building rules or ask a builder or engineer.
What it costs
Block: $4.24, the middle of only 3 Ontario stores. Type S mortar, 30 kg: $12.42, 4 stores. Oct 2026, before tax.
Quick answers
- Cinder blocks per square foot
- 1.16 per sq ft, or 12.5 per square metre. A block and its joints cover 400 × 200 mm.
- Size of a 20 cm block
- 390 × 190 × 190 mm, about 15.35 × 7.48 × 7.48 in.
- Weight of one block
- About 16.6 kg (36.6 lb) for a hollow 20 cm block, says Brampton Brick.
- Blocks per 30 kg mortar bag
- About 12, say Sakrete and Quikrete. That is 8.3 bags per 100 blocks.
- Block price
- About $4.24 for a 20 cm block, the middle of only 3 Ontario stores, before tax.
How to work it out
- Find the wall's length and height in feet, then multiply for square feet.
- Divide by 10.764 to get square metres.
- Multiply by 12.5 blocks per square metre.
- Add 5% (a US guide's figure) for broken and cut blocks. Round up.
- For mortar, multiply the blocks by 8.3 and divide by 100. Round up.
20 × 4 = 80 sq ft = 7.43 m²
7.43 × 12.5 = 92.9 blocks
92.9 + 5% = 97.5, so 98 blocks
98 × 8.3 ÷ 100 = 8.13, so 9 bags of 30 kg mortar
Cinder block wall: block and mortar counts by size
Each row uses 20 cm blocks, plus 5% extra (a US guide's figure). Mortar is 8.3 bags of 30 kg per 100 blocks, with nothing added.
| Wall | m² | Blocks | 30 kg mortar bags | Weight (tonnes) | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 4 ft | 3.7 | 49 | 5 | 0.8 | $270 |
| 20 × 4 ft | 7.4 | 98 | 9 | 1.7 | $527 |
| 20 × 8 ft | 14.9 | 196 | 17 | 3.3 | $1,042 |
| 30 × 8 ft | 22.3 | 293 | 25 | 5.0 | $1,553 |
| 40 × 8 ft | 29.7 | 391 | 33 | 6.6 | $2,068 |
Weight: 223 kg per m² of wall, with mortar (Brampton Brick). Cost: $4.24 a block and $12.42 a bag, before tax.
Metric blocks, metric count
Canadian 20 cm blocks are metric. With joints, each one covers 400 × 200 mm. That is 12.5 per m², or 1.16 per sq ft in either unit.
Blocks sized in inches give 1.125 per sq ft, about 3% fewer. US guides and Shaw Brick (Nova Scotia) use that count.
Concrete blocks to build a house or shed foundation
Add up the outside walls, then use that as one long wall. A 30 × 40 ft basement has 140 ft of wall. At 8 ft high, that takes about 1,366 blocks with 5% extra, before doors and windows. A foundation holds up the house, so check your local building rules or ask a builder or engineer.
A block wall under a shed works the same way. Type the shed's four sides as the length and the wall's height. Some sheds sit on blocks as piers, not on a wall. Under a 1-storey building, piers go no more than 3.5 m (about 11.5 ft) apart along the framing. That is the building code (Part 9) rule in BC and Ontario. Check with your city.
Cinder blocks for a raised garden bed
Measure all the way around the bed for the length. One course of 20 cm blocks is 200 mm high with its joint. A 4 × 8 ft bed has 24 ft of sides. One block high, it takes about 20 blocks with 5% extra. Type 0.66 ft (0.2 m) as the height for one course.
Metric block sizes and weights
Concrete blocks are also called cinder blocks or CMU, short for concrete masonry units. Canadian blocks come in 5 widths. All are 190 mm high and 390 mm long. An "8 in" block is the 20 cm size.
| Block | Size (mm) | Hollow weight | Per pallet | Price (stores) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 cm | 90 × 190 × 390 | 10.2 kg | 150 | – |
| 15 cm | 140 × 190 × 390 | 12.6 kg | 120 | – |
| 20 cm (8 in) | 190 × 190 × 390 | 16.6 kg | 90 | $4.24 (3) |
| 25 cm | 240 × 190 × 390 | 19.8 kg | 75 | $6.41 (3) |
| 30 cm | 290 × 190 × 390 | 23 kg | – | $4.49 (1) |
Size: width × height × length. Weights: Brampton Brick (Ontario). Pallets: one Nova Scotia maker's smooth, bullnose and utility blocks. Prices: Ontario stores, before tax; the 30 cm price is from 1 store only.
Block for foundations must be at least 15 MPa, says the building code (Part 9).
Mortar: how much, and which type
Pre-mixed mortar has the sand in the bag. A 30 kg bag makes about 18 L, say Sakrete, Bomix and King Block.
Sakrete Canada says one bag lays about 12 blocks. But its sheet shows a smaller 15 × 20 × 30 cm block. Quikrete's 30 kg page at Home Depot also says 12 standard blocks.
Only two makers give a count, so treat it as rough. We add nothing on top of it.
| Where | Wall | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Outside, above ground | Loadbearing walls and columns | S |
| Outside, above ground | Non-loadbearing walls and columns | N or S |
| Outside, above ground | Parapets, chimneys, masonry veneer | N or S |
| Outside, at or below ground | Foundation walls and columns | S |
| Inside | Loadbearing walls and columns | N |
| Inside | Non-loadbearing walls and columns | N |
From Table 9.20.3.2.-A, Part 9 (BC Building Code 2018 text).
Mixing your own
You can mix bagged masonry cement with sand instead. The code mix is 1 part masonry cement to 2¼ to 3 parts damp, loose sand.
Joints are 10 mm thick, give or take 5 mm. King Block, a Type S mortar, is not for filling block holes.
What blocks and mortar cost
- 20 cm block: $4.24, the middle of only 3 stores ($4.19–$5.24).
- Type S mortar, 30 kg: $12.42, the middle of 4 stores.
- Type N (or unnamed) mortar, 30 kg: $11.67, the middle of only 3 stores.
- Masonry cement, 30–33 kg: $23.66, the middle of only 3 stores. Add your own sand.
All are Ontario prices from Oct 2026, before tax. Prices in other provinces may differ.
The calculator counts blocks for a retaining wall too. But a wall that holds back soil or carries weight needs a plan. Check your local building rules or ask a builder or engineer.
Questions people ask
How many cinder blocks do I need?
Take the wall area in square metres and multiply by 12.5. A 20 × 4 ft wall takes 98 blocks, with 5% extra.
How big is a cinder block in inches?
The standard Canadian 20 cm block is 390 × 190 × 190 mm. That is about 7½ in tall, 7½ in wide and 15⅜ in long. With 10 mm joints, it fills 400 × 200 mm of wall.
How much does a cinder block weigh?
A hollow 20 cm block weighs about 16.6 kg (36.6 lb). A wall of them weighs about 223 kg per square metre, with mortar.
How many cinder blocks per bag of mortar?
About 12 per 30 kg bag of pre-mixed mortar, say Sakrete and Quikrete. Only two makers print a count, so treat it as rough.
How much mortar for cinder blocks?
About 8.3 bags of 30 kg for every 100 blocks. Each bag makes about 18 L of mortar.
Should I use Type S or Type N mortar?
Type S for block foundations, walls below ground and outside walls that carry weight. N or S for other outside walls. N inside, says the code.
How much is a cinder block in Canada?
About $4.24 for a 20 cm block and $6.41 for a 25 cm block. The middle of only 3 Ontario stores each, before tax.
Do you need a footing for a block wall?
