How to work it out
- Measure the paved part in feet, and multiply its length by its width.
- Pick the job. Multiply the square feet by its price per sq ft.
- If the old asphalt must come out, add removal. Ask first if the quote includes it; some do.
- Hold your quotes up against the answer.
20 × 40 = 800 sq ft
New driveway: 800 × $7.50 = $6,000
Take out the old one: 800 × $1.81 = $1,448
Total: $7,448

HL3 by the tonne: two kinds of price
You may see asphalt priced by the tonne. There are two kinds of tonne price. Keep them apart.
At the plant
This is the asphalt alone, picked up at the plant. Top mixes cost $79–$128 a tonne in a Niagara tender and on Calgary's plant list. Our middle price is $107.90; the asphalt calculator shows how. Trucking, spreading and rolling are extra.
Supplied and laid
Two Ontario town jobs show about $157 and $217 a tonne. A contractor probably supplied and laid the asphalt. We saw these only in search results, so treat them as rough.
For a 20 × 40 ft driveway, 50 mm thick, the asphalt alone is about 9.1 tonnes. At the plant, that is about $986. A crew's price of $6,000 also covers trucking, spreading and rolling. One Vancouver paver's price also covers removal and base prep.
