Crusher Run Calculator
Find how many tons of crusher run you need. Crusher run is crushed stone mixed with stone dust. We allow for packing it down.
Measure your project
Your answer
That is 13.55 cubic yards before packing. We added 10% extra.
Wet ground, laid on fabric, may need 8 in. Spread and pack it in layers of 4 in or less. Under a house slab or a shed, codes and shed makers often ask for clean stone instead.
What it costs
Price is the middle price of only 3 US suppliers (Oct 2026), per ton, before delivery. Ask your supplier for their price.
Quick answers
- How many tons in a yard?
- About 1.4 tons of loose stone. Packed down, a yard weighs about 1.86 tons.
- How much does a ton cover?
- About 44 sq ft at 4 in deep, packed. About 29 sq ft at 6 in.
- How deep?
- Driveway: 6 in, packed. Patio or path base: 4 in.
- Other names
- Crush and run, 21A, CR-6, DGA, QP, ABC and road bond are local names for similar stone.
How to work it out
- Measure the length and width in feet.
- Pick the depth after packing, in inches. Divide by 12.
- Multiply length × width × depth, then divide by 27. This gives packed cubic yards.
- Crusher run packs down, so multiply by 1.33. This gives loose cubic yards to order.
- Multiply loose cubic yards by 1.4 to get tons.
50 × 10 × 0.5 = 250 cubic feet
250 ÷ 27 = 9.26 cubic yards packed
9.26 × 1.33 = 12.31 loose
12.31 × 1.4 = 17.24 tons
Crusher run for common driveway sizes
Find your driveway size, then read across to your depth. Each depth is measured after packing.
The tons already include the extra loose stone that packs down.
| Driveway | 4 in deep | 6 in deep | 8 in deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 20 ft | 4.6 | 6.9 | 9.2 |
| 10 × 40 ft | 9.2 | 13.8 | 18.4 |
| 10 × 50 ft | 11.5 | 17.2 | 23.0 |
| 12 × 50 ft | 13.8 | 20.7 | 27.6 |
| 12 × 100 ft | 27.6 | 41.4 | 55.2 |
| 20 × 20 ft | 9.2 | 13.8 | 18.4 |
| 20 × 40 ft | 18.4 | 27.6 | 36.8 |
No extra is added here. The calculator adds 10% to start, as one supplier advises.
What one ton covers
The deeper you go, the less ground a ton covers. These numbers are for stone that has been packed down.
| Depth after packing | One ton covers |
|---|---|
| 2 in | 87 sq ft |
| 3 in | 58 sq ft |
| 4 in | 44 sq ft |
| 6 in | 29 sq ft |
Why some yards say a ton covers more
Some yards print bigger numbers. One yard in South Carolina says a ton covers 70 sq ft at 4 in. A yard in Georgia says 80 sq ft.
Those numbers use the weight of loose stone. Packed stone is heavier for its size, so a ton covers less.
At 4 in packed, plan on about 44 sq ft per ton. Ordering by a bigger number can leave you short.
How deep for each job
All depths below are after packing.
- Driveway for cars: 4–6 in. Our calculator starts at 6 in.
- Delivery trucks and RVs: 8–10 in.
- Farm machines: 12 in or more.
- Wet ground, on fabric: 8 in, says a US farm road standard. Dry, firm ground can take 4 in.
- Base under asphalt: 6–8 in.
- Base under pavers: 4 in for a patio, and 6 in for a driveway.
Under a slab or a shed
A house floor below ground level needs a base of 4 in, says the US home building code. Ground that drains well may not need it. The base must be clean graded sand, gravel or crushed stone. The code does not name crusher run.
One shed maker we checked, White Pine Structures, asks for a pad 4–6 in deep. It wants 3/4 in clean stone, not crusher run. Clean stone lets water drain away. Crusher run has stone dust in it, so it packs hard instead.
These are general guides. For a driveway or anything that holds weight, check your local building rules or ask a builder or engineer.
Crusher run names by state
The pieces in crusher run go from about 3/4–2 in down to fine dust. That mix is what lets it pack so hard.
Yards in different states call it different names. Use your local name when you phone a yard.
| Name | Where you may hear it |
|---|---|
| 21A, 21B | Virginia |
| CR-6 | Maryland |
| 2A | Pennsylvania |
| Item 4 | New York |
| 304 | Ohio |
| DGA | Kentucky |
| QP, road stone | Maryland, New York, New Jersey |
| ABC, road bond | South and North Carolina |
| 21AA | Michigan |
| Class 5 | Minnesota |
| CA-6 | Illinois |
| #53 | Indiana |
| Class 6 | Colorado |
Each state's mix of stone sizes is a little different. So these are alike, but not the same.
Ordering and spreading
Buying it
Yards we checked mostly price crusher run by the ton. Our middle price is $50 a ton, from 3 sellers in SC, GA and MD. That is only 3 prices, so ask your local yard.
Small amounts can cost more. One Baltimore store charges $77 for a single ton.
Delivery has its own rules. One Maryland yard only delivers 5 tons or more. One South Carolina yard delivers 15 tons free, for about $825 before tax.
Spreading it
- Spread no more than 4 in of stone at a time.
- Pack each layer with a plate compactor before you add the next.
- Keep the stone damp. A US farm road standard says a squeezed handful should hold together as a ball.
- Check the depth after packing, and top up low spots.
Questions people ask
How much crusher run do I need for my driveway?
A driveway for cars needs about 6 in, packed. At that depth, a 10 × 50 ft driveway takes about 17.2 tons. Use the calculator above for your size.
How many tons of crusher run are in a cubic yard?
About 1.4 tons, loose off the truck. Packed down, a cubic yard holds about 1.86 tons. Suppliers and road agencies give 1.21–1.75 tons for loose stone, as delivered.
How many cubic feet are in a ton of crusher run?
About 19.3 cubic feet of loose stone. Once packed, a ton fills about 14.5 cubic feet.
How much does 1 ton of crusher run cover?
About 44 sq ft at 4 in deep, packed. At 2 in, about 87 sq ft. Some yards quote more, because they skip the packing.
How much does crusher run compact?
It packs down by about a quarter. Penn State spreads 8 in of loose stone to get 6 in packed. So order about a third more than the packed amount.
How thick should crusher run be?
About 6 in, packed, for a car driveway. Use 8–10 in for trucks and RVs. A patio or path base needs 4 in.
How much crush and run do I need for a patio?
